Het wordt aangesloten op een O2-bron met een hoge stroomsnelheid en/of luchtbevochtigingsapparaat via een slang met een grote diameter. Het bestaat doorgaans uit een klein star plastic hulpmiddel dat rond de kin past en voor stabilisatie met een hoofdband wordt bevestigd. Het wordt doorgaans gebruikt voor patiënten die zuurstofafgifte via hulpmiddelen als een neuscanule of gezichtsmasker niet verdragen, meestal door chirurgie of trauma in het gezicht. Dit is geen O2-gezichtsmasker.
