Het heeft doorgaans de vorm van een conventionele handgreep met een koppelstuk dat de ingestoken tip vasthoudt, en een pneumatische voedingslijn (slangen) die op een moederhulpmiddel met gasbron wordt aangesloten. Wanneer gas naar de handgreep wordt toegevoerd, doorgaans met behulp van een voetschakelaar, wordt een mechanisme geactiveerd om de ingestoken tip te bedienen (bv. voor het openen en sluiten van bladen). Het wordt doorgaans gebruikt bij chirurgie in het voorste of achterste segment voor het snijden, grijpen en manipuleren van oogweefsel.
